There are some journeys that stay with you long after they end. My recent motorcycle adventure to Upper Mustang was exactly that kind of experience. What started as a simple plan to explore one of Nepal’s most remote regions turned into an unforgettable journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, challenging roads, ancient culture, and memories that I will cherish forever.
Upper Mustang had always been on my bucket list. Known as Nepal’s “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” this remote Himalayan region fascinated me with its unique geography, Tibetan- influenced culture, and centuries-old history. After months of planning, I finally got the opportunity to ride through this legendary land and experience its beauty firsthand.
This is my story of riding from Kathmandu to Jomsom, exploring the ancient city of Lo Manthang, visiting the sacred temple of Muktinath, and returning through Pokhara-a journey that tested my endurance while rewarding me with some of the most spectacular views Nepal has to offer.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Jomsom – The Adventure Begins
The excitement started early in the morning in Kathmandu. After a final check of my motorcycle and riding gear, I set off towards Mustang with a mix of excitement and anticipation.
Leaving Kathmandu’s busy streets behind, I gradually entered Nepal’s beautiful countryside. The roads wound through hills, rivers, and traditional villages where daily life moved at a much slower pace than in the capital. Throughout the journey, I was constantly greeted by stunning scenery-green hillsides terraced farmlands, and flowing rivers accompanying me along the route.
As I continued westward, the landscapes slowly began to change. The mountains grew larger and more dramatic. Every turn seemed to reveal another breathtaking view.
The ride was long and demanding. Covering around 370 kilometers and spending nearly 10 to 12 hours on the road required patience and concentration. Some sections were smooth, while others tested both rider and machine.
By evening, I finally arrived in Jomsom.
The cool mountain air immediately felt refreshing after the long ride. Surrounded by towering peaks and dramatic landscapes, Jomsom had a completely different atmosphere from Kathmandu. Standing there with my motorcycle after completing the first day’s journey gave me a strong sense of accomplishment.
As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, I enjoyed a warm meal and prepared mentally for the most exciting day of the trip.
Day 2: Jomsom to Lo Manthang and Muktinath- The Heart of Mustang
I woke up early in Jomsom to crisp mountain air and spectacular views. This was the day I had been looking forward to the most.
The road from Jomsom into Upper Mustang felt like entering another world.
The lush greenery gradually disappeared and was replaced by dramatic desert-like landscapes. Massive cliffs, colorful rock formations, deep canyons, and endless open valleys stretched before me. It was difficult to believe that I was still in Nepal.
The roads became rougher and more adventurous Gravel tracks, rocky paths, and uneven surfaces demanded full attention. At times, the ride was challenging, but every difficult section was rewarded with scenery beyond imagination.
One of my favorite moments was simply stopping my motorcycle, removing my helmet, and taking in the silence of the mountains. There were times when I could hear nothing except the wind moving through the valley.
Reaching Lo Manthang
After hours of riding through Upper Mustang, I finally arrived at Lo Manthang.
For years, I had seen photographs of this ancient walled city, but standing there in person was a completely different experience.
Walking through its narrow streets felt like stepping back in time. The traditional houses, ancient monasteries, prayer flags, and centuries-old architecture reflected a culture that has remained remarkably preserved.
I spent time exploring the historic town, visiting monasteries, and interacting with local people. Their hospitality and friendliness made the experience even more meaningful.
The peaceful atmosphere of Lo Manthang is something I will never forget.
Journey to Muktinath
After exploring Lo Manthang, I continued my ride towards Muktinath.
The route offered some of the most dramatic mountain scenery I encountered during the entire trip. The rugged Himalayan landscape seemed endless.
Arriving at Muktinath was a special moment.
Located at around 3800 meters above sea level, Muktinath is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. Pilgrimage from different parts of Nepal and India visit this holy place every year.
Although I was there primarily as a traveler and rider, I could feel the spiritual significance of the location. The peaceful environment, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and majestic mountain backdrop created an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
That evening, as I reflected on the day’s experiences, I realized that this single day had already exceeded all my expectations for the trip.
Day 3: Muktinath to Kusma and Pokhara – A Journey Through Changing Landscapes
The third day began with beautiful mountain views around Muktinath.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this section of the journey was witnessing how quickly the landscape changed.
As I descended from the high-altitude deserts of Mustang, the environment gradually transformed. Rocky valleys gave way to greener hillsides, forests appeared once again, and rivers flowed alongside the road.
The contrast between Upper Mustang and lower elevations was remarkable.
Every few kilometers seemed to reveal a completely different side of Nepal.
Stop at Kusma
On the way to Pokhara, I stopped at Kusma.
Known for its impressive suspension bridge and adventure activities, Kusma has become one of Nepal’s emerging tourism destinations.
Standing on the suspension bridges and looking down into the deep gorge below was both exciting and slightly intimidating. The views were incredible.
After taking photographs and enjoying a short break, I continued towards Pokhara.
Arrival in Pokhara
Reaching Pokhara felt like entering a completely different world after several days in the rugged mountains.
The relaxed atmosphere, beautiful lakeside environment, and comfortable facilities provided the perfect opportunity to rest and recover.
That evening, I walked along Phewa Lake and watched the sunset paint the sky with shades of orange and pink. It was one of those simple travel moments that becomes unforgettable.
After days of dust, rough roads, and mountain adventures, Pokhara offered the perfect balance of comfort and natural beauty.
Day 4: Pokhara to Kathmandu- The Final Ride
The final morning arrived sooner than I expected.
After breakfast, I began the journey back to Kathmandu.
Although the adventure was coming to an end, I found myself reflecting on everything I had experienced over the past few days.
The roads, the mountains, the people, the culture, and the incredible landscapes all blended together into a collection of memories that would stay with me for years.
The ride back was smoother and more relaxed compared to the challenging sections of Upper Mustang. It gave me time to appreciate the beauty of Nepal one last time before returning to city life.
When I finally arrived in Kathmandu, I felt both exhausted and fulfilled.
The journey had tested my riding skills, challenged my endurance, and rewarded me with experiences that few places in the world can offer.
The Landscapes
Upper Mustang’s desert- like terrain is unlike anywhere else in Nepal. The colorful cliffs, deep canyon, and vast open valleys create scenery that feels almost otherworldly.
The Adventure
The rough roads and remote environment added a genuine sense of adventure. Every kilometer felt earned.
The Culture
Experiencing the Tibetan-influenced culture of Mustang was one of the most enriching parts of the journey. The monasteries, traditions, and local communities provided valuable insight into a unique way of life.
The Spiritual Experience
Visiting Muktinath added another dimension to the trip. The Peaceful atmosphere and religious significance made it a memorable stop.
Personal Achievement
Completing the route gave me a tremendous sense of satisfaction. The challenges along the way made the accomplishment even more meaningful.
Final Thoughts
My Upper Mustang Motorcycle Adventure was more than just a road trip-it was a journey through history, culture, spirituality, and some of the most extraordinary landscapes in the Himalayas.
From the busy streets of Kathmandu to the ancient walls of Lo Manthang, from the sacred groups of Muktinath to the peaceful shores of Phewa Lake, every moment offered something unique and unforgettable.

For me, this journey was not simply about reaching a destination. It was about the experiences collected along the way, the challenges overcome, and the memories created on every twist and turn of the road.
And even now, after returning home, a part of me still remains somewhere among the windswept valleys and ancient trails of Upper Mustang.
