Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to one of the largest populations of greater one-horned rhinoceros anywhere, along with Royal Bengal tigers, gharial and mugger crocodiles, and a genuinely wide range of birdlife. Jungle activities on this itinerary include a jeep safari, a canoe ride along the Rapti River, a guided jungle walk, and an evening Tharu cultural dance performance. Beyond the wildlife, Chitwan is also a cultural stop — the Tharu people, indigenous to the Terai region, have their own distinct language, architecture, and traditions, and a walk through a nearby village gives a genuine look at daily life here.

What the Journey Looks Like

The trip moves in one direction, roughly following Nepal’s geography from north-central hills down to the southern plains and back. You’ll start in Kathmandu, drive west to Pokhara through the mid-hills, continue south into Chitwan’s flat, warm lowlands, and then head back north to Kathmandu to close the trip. Best Time to Visit

Autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) offer the clearest mountain views in Pokhara and comfortable temperatures throughout. Winter (December-February) is cooler, especially in Kathmandu and Pokhara mornings, but still workable, with good visibility. Monsoon (June-August) brings rain and reduced mountain visibility, though Chitwan’s wildlife viewing can still be good in the shoulder months either side of the heaviest rains.
