An Upper Mustang motorcycle expedition is often considered one of the most rewarding adventure rides in Nepal because it offers far more than just a journey from one destination to another. The ride takes you from the green hills and river valleys of central Nepal into a dramatic high-altitude desert landscapes that feels entirely different from the rest of the country. A typical motorcycle journey begins in Kathmandu or Pokhara before following the route through Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha, Jomsom, Kagbeni, Tsarang, and finally Lo Manthang. Day 01: Kathmandu(1400m) to Jomsom (2743m) Distance- 370 km/ Driving time-10-12 hours) depending on road and traffic conditions.

Day 02: Jomsom (2743m) to Lo Manthang (3840m) to Muktinath (3800m) Distance- 190km/ Driving time- 9-11 hours)

Day 03: Muktinath (3800m) to Kusma (947m) Distance- 175km/ Driving time-7-9 hours) to Pokhara (822m) Distance -58km/ Driving time- 2hours)

Day 04: Pokhara (822m) to Kathmandu (1400m) Distance- 200km / Driving time- 6-8 hours)

 

Detailed Itinerary

Your journey begins early in the morning from Kathmandu, leaving behind busy capital and driving west along the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river valleys. As you travel through the mid-hills of Nepal, the landscapes gradually Changes from green forests and terraced farmlands to the dramatic, dry terrain of Kali Gandaki gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world. Passing through Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, and Marpha, you will witness a remarkable transition in climate and vegetation. The lush subtropical forests of lower elevations give way to alpine terrain characterized by rocky cliffs, juniper shrubs, and barren hillsides. Along the route, spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges emerge, including peaks such as Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri.

After an early breakfast, drive north into the legendary region of Upper Mustang. As you pass Kagbeni and cross the gateway into the ancient Kingdom of Mustang, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Deep canyons, colorful eroded cliffs, ancient cave systems, and vast desert-like valleys dominate the landscape. Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, creating a unique trans-Himalayan environment similar to the Tibetan Plateau. The region receives very little rainfall, resulting in clear skies, striking geological formations, and sparse vegetation. Upon reaching Lo Manthang, explore the centuries-old walled city that served as the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo. The area is rich in Tibetan Buddhist heritage, featuring monasteries, prayer wheels, chortens, and traditional mud-brick houses. The local people maintain a culture, language, dress and lifestyle closely linked to Tibet. After sightseeing, begin the return journey toward Muktinath Temple. Located at approximately 3800 meters, Muktinath is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple complex is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and offers a spiritual atmosphere amidst the rugged Himalayan landscapes.

Begin the morning with a visit to Muktinath Temple and its sacred surroundings. Pilgrims often visit the 108 water spouts and eternal flame shrine before starting their journey back south.
