The Upper Mustang Motorcycle Ride takes you from the green hills and river valleys of central Nepal into the stark, high-altitude landscapes of Mustang, where bare cliffs, wind-carved rock formations, deep gorges, and wide desert valleys replace the forests and farmland below. The further north you ride, the more the landscape changes — and so does the culture, with Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient monasteries, prayer walls, and traditional mud-brick architecture appearing along the route.

The journey leads to Lo Manthang, the historic walled city that once served as the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo and remains one of Upper Mustang’s most distinctive cultural destinations. But reaching Lo Manthang is only part of the experience. The real attraction is the journey itself: riding remote Himalayan roads through dramatic terrain, navigating rough and uneven sections, and watching the landscape transform from subtropical valleys into high-altitude desert.

This 6-day motorcycle adventure follows the route from Kathmandu through Pokhara and Jomsom before entering Upper Mustang and continuing toward Lo Manthang. It is designed for riders who want more than a conventional road trip — a combination of adventure riding, Himalayan scenery, and the distinctive cultural heritage of Mustang in one compact journey.

Lo Manthang The walled city of Lo Manthang is the cultural heart of Upper Mustang and the former capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Its traditional architecture, active monasteries, and Tibetan-influenced heritage make it one of the most distinctive places in Nepal — genuinely unlike anywhere else on a typical Nepal itinerary.

The Landscape The scenery shifts dramatically the deeper you ride into Mustang. Green valleys and river gorges gradually give way to dry, high-altitude desert, with dramatic cliffs, colorful rock formations, and wide open valleys replacing the forest and farmland of the lower route.

The Ride Itself Reaching Lo Manthang isn’t the only reason people do this trip. Riding remote Himalayan roads, working through rough and technical terrain, and watching the landscape transform around you hour by hour is just as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.

A Day in the Life

Mornings start early, checking over the bike and gear before the day’s ride — at this altitude and on these roads, a quick pre-ride check genuinely matters. The riding itself demands real concentration: loose gravel, river crossings, and narrow, exposed sections keep you focused in a way a paved highway never would. Stops happen wherever the scenery or a village calls for one — a monastery, a viewpoint, a teahouse for tea and a break from the wind. By the time you reach the day’s stop, the landscape has usually changed shape entirely from where you started that morning. Evenings are simple: a hot meal, sore hands from the ride, and conversation with the rest of the group about the day’s terrain before an early night ahead of the next one.

Motorcycle & Riding Requirements

Recommended motorcycles: adventure motorcycles with good ground clearance, reliable engines, strong low-speed control, and capable suspension are recommended for this route. Speed isn’t the priority here — control over rough terrain is.

Riding experience: previous experience riding on gravel, uneven mountain roads, or genuine off-road terrain is strongly recommended. This isn’t the route to learn adventure riding for the first time.

Difficulty & What to Expect

This is a genuinely demanding ride, not a scenic cruise. Expect:

• Long daily riding hours, several days running 6-9 hours in the saddle
• Rough, unpaved sections for significant stretches of the route, particularly around Kagbeni and the high desert approaching Lo Manthang
• River crossings and loose gravel, especially outside the main dry season
• High altitude, with Lo Manthang itself sitting at roughly 3,840m — mild altitude effects like headache or fatigue are possible
• Changeable mountain weather, including strong afternoon winds through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the windiest corridors in Nepal
• Genuinely remote terrain, with limited mechanical support once you’re deep into the restricted area

Permits. Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so every rider needs a Restricted Area Permit alongside an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). As of early 2026, the permit fee structure changed to USD 50 per person per day, replacing the old flat rate for the first 10 days. A licensed guide is mandatory for the restricted section beyond Kagbeni, though the previous rule requiring a minimum of two riders was dropped in March 2026, so solo riders can now join with a guide.

Best Time to Ride

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most stable weather and the clearest mountain views, making them the best windows for this ride. Winter (December-February) brings serious cold and possible snow at higher points on the route. The monsoon (June-August) is actually a reasonable option for Upper Mustang specifically, since it sits in a rain shadow behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges — but the approach roads through Beni and Tatopani, outside the rain shadow, can still be muddy and landslide-prone during this period.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara

Ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara, covering approximately 200 km through Nepal’s changing landscapes. The route takes you from the Kathmandu Valley toward the greener hills and river valleys of central Nepal.

Day 2: Pokhara to Jomsom

Continue north from Pokhara toward Jomsom, following the Kali Gandaki corridor through increasingly rugged mountain terrain. The landscape changes dramatically as you approach the Mustang region.

Day 3: Jomsom to Lo Manthang

Ride deeper into Upper Mustang toward Lo Manthang. The scenery transitions into the region’s characteristic high-altitude desert landscape, with dramatic cliffs, rocky valleys, traditional villages, and Tibetan-influenced cultural sites along the way.

Day 4: Lo Manthang to JomsomAfter reaching Lo Manthang, begin the return journey toward Jomsom, retracing the dramatic Upper Mustang route and experiencing the landscape from a different perspective.

Day 5: Jomsom to Beni

Ride south from Jomsom toward Beni, descending through the Kali Gandaki valley as the dry Mustang landscape gradually gives way to greener mountain scenery.

Day 6: Beni to Kathmandu
Complete the motorcycle journey from Beni to Kathmandu, following the winding roads through Nepal’s middle hills and river valleys. The adventure ends in Kathmandu after approximately 280 km of riding.
