Mardi Himal vs Annapurna Base Camp: Which Short Annapurna Trek Should You Choose?

October 16, 2026

Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) both start near Pokhara. Both climb through rhododendron forest. Both end with huge views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Annapurna range. So it’s easy to wonder which one is the better choice.

They’re closer than most treks, but they feel different on the trail. One is a quiet ridge walk that reaches high altitude fast. The other is a longer climb into a giant mountain bowl. This guide compares them side by side, so you can choose with confidence.

Quick Answer

  • Choose Mardi Himal if you have only 4 to 6 days, want a quieter trail, or want a lower price.
  • Choose Annapurna Base Camp if you have 7 days or more, want a slower climb, or want the famous 360-degree view from inside the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Prices and days come from several 2026 sources and vary by operator, so treat them as close estimates. Heights also vary by source, since “Mardi Himal Base Camp” and “Upper Viewpoint” are sometimes treated as different points.

The Big Surprise: Mardi Is Higher Than ABC

Most people assume ABC is the bigger trek. But Mardi Himal’s top viewpoint sits at about 4,200 to 4,500 m, which is higher than ABC at 4,130 m.

The difference is how fast you get there. A short Mardi trek reaches that height in about 4 days from Pokhara. That means less time to adjust to the altitude than on ABC. That’s why altitude sickness is something to take seriously on Mardi, even though it’s a short trek. Go slowly, drink water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Difficulty: Different Kinds of Moderate

Both treks are rated moderate, and neither needs climbing skills. But they challenge you differently.

Mardi Himal is steep. The trail climbs through forest, then follows a narrow ridge above the tree line. The last day to the viewpoint is long, often 6 to 7 hours round trip, starting before dawn. It’s short, but it’s a real effort.

Annapurna Base Camp is longer. The trail goes up and down many times, with thousands of stone steps, like the long staircase at Ulleri. We cover this in our first-timer surprises guide for ABC .

Bottom line: Mardi is quicker and steeper. ABC is slower and tougher on the legs over more days.

Scenery: Ridge Views or a Mountain Bowl

Mardi Himal gives you a ridge-top view. You walk along a high crest with Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal rising close beside you. You can see them for much of the walk above the forest, not just at the end.

Annapurna Base Camp gives you a 360-degree amphitheater. You walk into the Annapurna Sanctuary and stand surrounded by Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna South. See our best viewpoints on the ABC trek  for the top stops.

Villages and Culture

ABC passes through more villages, such as Ghandruk and Chhomrong, with Gurung stone houses and terraced fields. It also ends with a soak in the Jhinu Danda hot springs.

Mardi has fewer villages. Most of the trail is forest and ridge, with simple lodges at Low Camp and High Camp, then a descent to Siding, a traditional village. If you want more culture and comfort, ABC has more of it.

Crowds

Mardi Himal is often called a hidden gem because it’s quieter. You’ll likely share the trail with far fewer people. ABC is much busier, especially in peak spring and autumn.

That said, Mardi has become more popular each year. If you want true quiet, travel in the weeks just outside the busiest peak.

Cost

Mardi usually costs less because it takes fewer days. Market guided prices run from about $350 for a basic short trek to about $750 for a longer, more complete package.

Here’s how Snowbank’s packages compare. [Insert Snowbank’s Mardi Himal package price here.] Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek – 10 days costs about $879.

Permits are a small cost on both treks. Both need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which costs about NPR 3,000. Some sources also list a TIMS card, so confirm the current rule with your operator.

Which Trek Is Right for You?

Choose Mardi Himal if:

  • You have 4 to 6 days to spare
  • You want a quieter ridge trail
  • You’re on a tighter budget
  • You’ve trekked at altitude before, or are willing to go slowly

Choose Annapurna Base Camp if:

  • You have 7 days or more
  • You want a slower climb and more time to adjust to the altitude
  • You prefer more villages, lodges, and hot springs
  • It’s your first Himalayan trek

Still unsure? Think about your calendar first. If you have under a week, Mardi is the easier fit. If you have more time, ABC is a gentler, fuller experience.

Tips for Either Trek

  • Go slowly and drink plenty of water. This matters most on Mardi’s fast climb.
  • Bring trekking poles. They help on steep stairs and ridge descents.
  • Start early. Clear mornings give the best views, and clouds often build later.
  • Pack warm layers. High Camp and ABC get very cold at night.
  • Pick the right season. Spring and autumn are best for both.
